Emperor Shōwa was Emperor of Japan from 25 December 1926 until his death in 1989. He reigned through a surge in Japanese militarism leading up to Japan's involvement in World War II as an Axis power. As head of state of the Empire of Japan, he announced the surrender of Japan to the Allied powers in August 1945 and formally signed the Japanese Instrument of Surrender in September 1945.
