George Stanley McGovern was an American politician, diplomat, and historian from South Dakota who served in both chambers of the United States Congress, first as a member of the United States House of Representatives for two terms representing South Dakota's 1st congressional district from 1957 to 1961, and a member of the United States Senate for three terms from 1963 to 1981. He also served as the director of Food for Peace in 1961 and 1962 under President John F. Kennedy.
